Winona: Historic Island City
Winona is considered by some to be one of the most beautiful places in the country, nestled between 500 foot limestone river bluffs and the stunning Mississippi River.
Winona's rich history began 1851, when it was founded by a steamboat captain. Positioned on a large island in the Mississippi, the lumber industry helped it grow quickly, and by 1900 Winona was (per capita) one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. Winona’s history lives on in architecturally significant historic buildings, vintage homes, and the museums that preserve the heritage of this great "river town."
Winona is also a place where arts and natural opportunities are abundant. With numerous area State Parks, museums and festivals, Winona and its surrounding communities are the arts and recreational center of the region. A visit to the Winona area is about discovery. On the same day, it is not uncommon to see bald eagles fly overhead and experience one of Van Gogh's first oil paintings at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
