Discussions:
Engage with specialists who will speak about our collections, artistic techniques, river culture and themes related to current exhibitions. Lectures are either held in the Museum's Education Room located behind Gallery 3, or in the Museum's central atrium area accesible through the main entrance. Discussions are free, but space is sometimes limited. These progrmas are made possible by the generous support of the Ernest and Sally Micek family in memory of W.B. "Bill" Gautsch. Thank you Miceks!
“Marsh, River, Lake: Edward S. Curtis and the Environment”
with George Slade
Wednesday, January 18, 6-7 pm
Edward S. Curtis created a composite portrait of American Indians that drew on fact and fantasy. Many of his photographs relied on settings in nature. How did these “environmental” portraits differ from work made under more controlled studio settings? How did natural settings affect the way Curtis represented Indians, and how do those settings affect the way we now understand Curtis’ massive project? These are some of the questions speaker George Slade will address during his talk.
“Impressionism: Gateway to Modern Art”
with Vittorio Colaizzi
Wednesday, February 22, 6-7 pm
For much of the early history of modern art, Impressionism had been seen as frivolous and unstructured. In the 1950s, Impressionism's reputation was rehabilitated, as some of its qualities, for example the emphasis on the paint itself and the use of pure color, became visible in the work of Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman. This talk will trace the evolution of these qualities from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism and beyond.
“The Nature of Place in Six Photographs”
with Drake Hokanson
Thursday, March 22, 6-7 pm
How do photographs convey place? Join author, photographer, and WSU professor emeritus Drake Hokanson as he guides us through an illustrated talk by looking at six very different photographs from several of his projects and uses each one to describe some aspect of the idea of place, for example how to "read" a place, the layered nature of place, and the varied view of a place depending on personal perspective.
